Assessment Procedures
Stages 5 and 6
How do I appeal a formal assessment result?
Each student has the right to appeal against an assessment decision. The student is the only person who can lodge an appeal. In the case of an assessment appeal, the student must approach the teacher directly and every attempt should be made to resolve the issue at this level before lodging an appeal.
Students should be aware that if you appeal a result either formally or informally, the outcome may be a higher mark, the same mark or a lower mark.
Step 1 - Informal Consideration
You should approach your teacher if you have queries regarding the marking of a particular formal assessment task. Outline the nature of your query, being sure to justify your request with reference to the marking criteria or rubric. Ask your teacher to review the relevant parts of your assessment task. The teacher may then either remark your assessment task, explain to you why your query is not eligible for remarking or take other action as appropriate.
If you are not satisfied with the outcome of your teacher's review, you may lodge a formal appeal.
Step 2 - Formal Appeal
If you remain dissatisfied, you may lodge a formal appeal to be considered by the Head of Academic Innovation in consultation with your teacher. The grounds for appeal must identify that the result received was not based on the assessment marking criteria as outlined in the assessment task.
To lodge a formal appeal, the student should complete an assessment appeal application form and lodge it with the Head of Academic Innovation. You should clearly outline the reason for your request by linking it to the marking criteria you received.
Valid grounds for an appeal
- The overall result is not based on the issued assessment marking criteria
- The marking criteria and assessment task did not address the stated learning outcomes in the assessment notification
- Specific questions have not been marked according to the marking criteria
- Errors in the addition of results for each question
- Other grounds accepted for appeal by the teacher and Head of Academic Innovation.
All formal appeals must be submitted in writing (i.e. completion of the assessment appeal form).
