Music 1 (2U)

Board Developed Course (240 hours)

Available in Years 11 and 12

Aim

The aim of Music 1 Stage 6 is to provide students with the opportunity to acquire knowledge, skills and experiences and to emerge as musically sensitive and capable individuals with the capacity and desire for music to play a significant and continually developing role in their lives. Students will study the concepts of music through the learning experiences of performance, composition, musicology and listening within the context of a range of styles, periods and genres.

The course provides students with opportunities to engage in a range of musical styles, including Contemporary Popular Music. The nature of music study also allows students to develop their capacity to manage their own learning, work together with others and engage in activities that reflect the real world practice of performers, composers and audiences.

Music 1 builds on the Year 7 – 8 Mandatory Course. It caters for students who have diverse musical backgrounds and musical interests, including those with an interest in Popular Music. The curriculum structure is adaptable enough to meet the needs and interests of students with varying degrees of prior formal and informal learning in music. It accommodates the beginner instrumental and/or vocal skills to those with highly developed performance skills in a variety of musical styles.

Preliminary Course

In the Preliminary course, students will study the concepts of music through the learning experiences of performance, composition, musicology and aural within the context of a range of styles, periods and genres.

Students study three topics in the Preliminary course. Topics are chosen from a list of 21 topics which covers a broad range of styles, periods and genres.

While the course builds on the Stages 4 and 5 Music course, Music 1 provides an alternative course of study to Music 2. The curriculum structure is adaptable enough to meet the needs and interests of students with varying degrees of prior formal and informal learning in music and caters for students with less experience in Music.

HSC Course

In the HSC course, students will study the concepts of music through the learning experiences of performance, composition, musicology and aural within the context of a range of styles, periods and genres.

Students study three topics in the HSC course which are different from those studied in the Preliminary course or two topics which are different from those studied in the Preliminary course and one topic from the Preliminary course in greater depth exploring new repertoire and including a comparative study. Topics are chosen from a list of 21 topics which covers a broad range of styles, periods and genres.

In addition to core studies in performance, composition, musicology and aural, students select three electives from any combination of performance, composition and musicology. These electives must represent each of the three topics studied in the course.

Particular Course Requirements

HSC course

Students selecting Music 1 are required to keep a portfolio of the development of each of the components Core Composition and Elective Composition.

Prerequisites

Every student is capable of doing Music 1 for the HSC. Music 1 assumes no prior knowledge of musical notation beyond the basic introduction of the Years 7 – 8 Mandatory Course. Although it is recommended, it is not essential for students to have completed an elective course in Music in Years 9 – 10. It recognises that students who have had no further involvement in Music beyond their introduction in the Mandatory Course will need to revisit elementary musical skills in the Preliminary Course.
