Examination Conduct and Procedures

For students in Stages 5 and 6, examination blocks may be placed in the calendar so that normal lessons are suspended and students need only be at school to sit their examinations. During these examination blocks, students are expected to adhere to the procedures and conduct outlined here.

Conduct during examinations

On entering the examination room, all students are expected to comply with the following code of conduct. This code has been put in place to provide each and every student with the best chance of success during examinations and is founded on ASG's three pillars of faith, excellence and respect.

Any breach of this code will initiate the academic misconduct procedures, the outcome of which may disqualify the student from receiving an examination result and jeopardise satisfactory completion of the course in question.

  • When in the examination room, students are not permitted to communicate with other students in any way, either verbal or non-verbal.
  • Students are to follow instructions from teachers/supervisors when assembling before an examination; during an examination and after the examination, before students leave.
  • Students are to behave in a polite and courteous manner toward the teachers, supervisors and other students.
  • Students should not:
    • speak to any person other than a supervisor during an examination.
    • attempt to obtain assistance from teachers/supervisors regarding the content of the examination paper.
    • behave in any way likely to disturb the work of any other student or upset the conduct of the examination (such as turning around to speak to or look at other students).
    • take into the examination room any books, notes, the examination timetable, any paper, or any other equipment other than what is required for the examination being completed.
    • take a mobile phone, or other electronic devices, into the examination room; unless approved by the subject that is conducting the examination.
    • take any examination booklets, whether used or unused, from the examination room.
    • eat in the examination room.

No responsibility will be taken for the safe-keeping of any unauthorised material or equipment surrendered to teachers/supervisors before or during the examinations.

Students who do not comply with this code of conduct during examinations will be removed from the examination room and become the subject of a review for academic misconduct. Outcomes of this review may include, cancellation of the examination paper(s) for the course(s) concerned, in-school suspension, suspension and/or non-completion award for the course(s) concerned.

Students who do not make a serious attempt at an examination, may not receive a mark in that course and may not be eligible for the award of the course grade. Examination responses containing frivolous and/or objectionable material may also initiate a review of academic misconduct. Answers not written in English, except where required or permitted by the question paper, may be classified as non-serious attempts.

Examination procedures

On entering the examination room:

  • students are expected to sit at a desk indicated by the supervising staff. The position of the desk may vary from session to session according to the accommodation and the requirements of the examination.
  • it is the student's responsibility to make sure that the correct examination paper has been provided for the course you have entered. When asked to do so by the supervisor, students should check question papers to make sure that there are no pages missing.
  • most courses have some reading and familiarisation time, usually five minutes. During this time, students are not permitted to write anything on the exam paper.

During written examinations, students are to:

  • read the instructions on the front page and any other pages of the examination papers carefully. Supervisors are not permitted to interpret questions or instructions relating to questions.
  • write a name or student number on all writing booklets, special answer books and answer sheets.
  • write with blue or black pen. Pencil may be used only where specifically directed.
  • make sure that they write down your answers in the correct answer books. If you write an answer in the wrong booklet, tell the supervisor.
  • stop writing immediately when told by the teacher/supervisor.
  • arrange completed answers according to the supervisor’s instructions and wait for the supervisor to collect them.

Students should not:

  • commence writing until instructed to do so by the supervisor.
  • leave the examination room early (except in an emergency). If students need to leave the examination room with the intention of returning to resume the examination, they must be supervised while absent from the examination room.

At the end of the examination:

  • students should follow instructions from the supervisor.
  • the collection process will require students to wait until the paper is collected by the teacher/supervisor.
  • students should place any unused paper or rubbish into the appropriate bins.
