Personal Development, Health and Physical Education

100 hours

Rationale

The PDHPE programme aims to develop in students the desire to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, respect for themselves and others, and a willingness to participate in a positive way in school and community life. It also encourages understanding and valuing oneself and others.

This programme of study at All Saints Grammar School has been designed to facilitate all students, K - 12 and is concerned with the development of the whole person and the improvement of quality of life for all. The Stage 5 course builds on the foundation of learning acquired by students at the Primary Campus and Stage 4, providing the springboard for entry into additional studies in Years 11 and 12.

Personal Development/Health

Health is compulsory for all students in Years 9-10. The focus is to develop the student's awareness of the importance of nutrition and other health related topics. The following topics and skills are covered by our specialist teachers:

  • Active Lifestyle

  • Relating to Others

  • Making choices about Drugs, Adolescence and Change

  • Nutrition

  • Consumer Health

  • First Aid/Emergency Care

  • Personal Safety

  • Fitness Planning

  • Sports Nutrition

  • Leadership

  • Road Safety

Just as the cognitive, psychomotor and aesthetic aspects of learning cannot be separated, likewise the individual's total development must be viewed as the sum of many interrelated parts. In the framework provided by the syllabus, physical development is not to be seen as something that is separate from the development of the whole person. On the contrary, the role of physical activity is important in promoting health and can contribute to improving self-image, developing self-confidence and cultivating interpersonal skills.

Physical Education

Physical Education is compulsory for all students in Years 9 -10. Participation in regular and varied physical activity ensures optimal structural growth and the efficient functioning of the body. The following physical activities and skills are covered by our specialist teachers:

  • Soccer

  • Athletics

  • Oztag

  • Fitness Testing

  • Netball

  • Volleyball

  • Basketball

  • Dance

  • Futsal Soccer

  • European Handball

  • Softball

  • Ultimate Frisbee

  • Cricket

  • Minor Games

It must be stated that the place of PDHPE in the Core Curriculum is not purely related to sporting prowess, skills acquisition, movement experiences, fitness enhancement or knowledge of health related issues. While these are indeed central concerns, the programme would be falling short in its pursuit of Physical, Social, Intellectual and Spiritual objectives if not for its healthy convergence with other Key Learning Areas.

Assessment

Students will be given the opportunity to demonstrate their learning through:

  • The application of core skills in health and physical activity

  • Assignments / projects

  • Formal Examination

Students who complete the prescribed course of study in PDHPE at All Saints Grammar School will be equipped with the " tools " for personal assessment; they will have experienced a sense of general purpose through co-operative endeavour, students will be able to make informed decisions with regard to their recreational preferences, personal development and health and they would have been involved in an area of study which seeks to integrate the spiritual, social, physical and academic life of the School.
