Both the Secondary and Primary campuses offer Greek as an additional language of study to assist the students to feel and gain an awareness of their cultural and religious heritage.
The aim of the Greek Programme is to develop the ability of students in spoken and written Greek, as well as to enhance their knowledge, appreciation and understanding of Hellenic History and Culture.
The programme in Stage 5 aims to set a high academic standard in the study of Modern Greek language and culture. Students study literature, drama, and Modern Greek history, songs, language and grammar. Students are assessed in all areas of language skills, namely speaking, reading, listening and writing. The broad stimulus to which they are exposed through the different course components, aims to cultivate and to develop to a competent level the above mentioned skills.
Greek is taught encompassing three areas of study which include:
Greek Language in both the written and the spoken word - Students will undertake study in grammar, spelling and vocabulary, focusing on written and spoken language
This includes:
* Interaction: Students will learn to exchange information, ideas, and opinions using culturally appropriate Greek in different situations.
* Understanding Texts: Students will analyse and respond to various texts, demonstrating their understanding of the information, ideas, and perspectives presented.
* Creating Texts: Students will create a variety of texts for different purposes, using Greek in a culturally appropriate way.
Greek Geography - Students study Greece's topography, special landmarks, and environment, which helps them understand and appreciate different geographical contexts.
Greek Culture - Students are encouraged to learn about the essence of Greek culture and traditions. Learning about another culture will help them develop respect, openness, and empathy.
Teachers employ a comprehensive approach targeting student progress and individual needs. Ongoing monitoring through regular formative assessment provides opportunities for the teacher to evaluate individual performance, identify strengths and areas for improvement, and opportunities to adjust teaching practice. Adopting a balanced approach by rotating focus on the four macro skills—speaking, writing, reading, and listening— provides varied assessment activities for developing well-rounded language abilities. This multifaceted assessment strategy fosters an assessment for learning program whereby students are empowered to thrive and progress effectively in their language acquisition.
