Rationale

Both the Secondary and Primary campuses offer Greek as an additional language of study to assist the students to feel and gain an awareness of their cultural and religious heritage.

The aim of the Greek Programme is to develop the ability of students in spoken and written Greek, as well as to enhance their knowledge, appreciation and understanding of Hellenic History and Culture.

The programme in Stage 5 aims to set a high academic standard in the study of Modern Greek language and culture. Students study literature, drama, and Modern Greek history, songs, language and grammar. Students are assessed in all areas of language skills, namely speaking, reading, listening and writing. The broad stimulus to which they are exposed through the different course components, aims to cultivate and to develop to a competent level the above mentioned skills.


Areas of Study

Greek is taught encompassing three areas of study which include:

  • Greek Language in both the written and the spoken word - Students will undertake study in grammar, spelling, literature and poetry.

  • Greek Geography - Students study the topography, special landmarks and environment of Greece.

  • Greek Culture & History - Students are encouraged to learn the essence of Greek culture and the rich history of our ancestors.


Assessment

The criteria used for assessing students in Modern Greek are:

  • Regular class testing in spelling and grammar

  • Oral presentations

  • Skill-based assessment tasks
