Assessment Procedures

Formal assessment tasks

Formal assessment tasks are those that are completed by all students in the course or grade under the same conditions to ensure fairness. These tasks are assessed formally by teachers using consistent marking guidelines and or rubrics. Formal assessment tasks might be class tests, quizzes, assignments, projects or examinations. The marks collected from formal assessment tasks are used to inform teacher judgement about your learning progress against the learning intentions for the course.

The annual assessment program for each subject is published on this site for each subject and grade at the beginning of each academic year.

Assessment notifications

Students should expect to receive an assessment notification before the task is due for submission that should include (among other things):

  • full instructions regarding nature of the assessment task,
  • an outline of the key criteria in the marking guidelines,
  • the syllabus outcomes being assessed,
  • the weighting for the task,
  • the type of submission, and
  • the due date.

Request for extension

Applications for an extension of the due date for an assessment task should be discussed with the teacher concerned well in advanced of the due date of the assessment concerned.

An application for an extension of the due date for an assessment task is to be submitted on or before the assessment due date. The only exception is where the student could not reasonably be expected to have applied by the appropriate date due to illness or other medical conditions. In this case, an application for consideration due to illness/misadventure should be lodged in consultation with your teacher.

Late submissions

Where a formal assessment task is submitted after the due date, students are penalised by 10% of the total marks available for the task for each day after the due date, or part thereof. Weekends count as two days!

If students are away due to illness on the day of submission of a formal assessment task or examination, the guidelines for illness/misadventure should be followed immediately on returning to school.
