Board Developed Course (240 hours)

Available in Years 11 and 12

PDHPE involves students learning about and practising ways of maintaining active/ healthy lifestyles and improving their health status. The syllabus focuses on the health of individuals and communities and the factors that influence movement skill and physical activity levels.

The course looks at how and why diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disease are priority health areas in Australia. Students will analyse why certain population groups have a higher prevalence of disease and what strategies can be used to reduce the incidence of disease in these population groups. Students will evaluate various health promotion initiatives looking at their effectiveness in following the Ottawa Charter's Action Areas. Students will critically analyse Australia's Health Care System looking at Medicare, alternative health care approaches and how well the system can handle a growing and ageing population.


Students will also study the various body systems and how they react to physical activity. They will analyse sports science through biomechanics and sports-related examples of physics. The energy systems of the body will be studied in relation to when and how they are used by the body. As they progress through the course, students will broaden their understanding of training methods, nutrition, recovery startgies and sports psychology and critically analyse how they can be implemented to enhance performance.


Throughout the course students will be given opportunities to practically apply what they have learnt to increase their knowledge and understanding of concepts studied.
